Southwood Elementary School
Title I Parental Involvement Policy
The staff at Southwood Elementary School believes that the education of children is a collaborative effort between the parents and school. Student success is directly related to amount of parental involvement at the school level and with the utilization of highly qualified staff members. Southwood Elementary has developed this policy to describe the expectations and opportunities for parental involvement.
At the beginning of each year in conjunction with our orientation meeting, Southwood Elementary holds a meeting at which parents are informed of our participation in Title I and of their right to be involved. Pertinent information is presented in relation to NCLB legislation and the status of Southwood Elementary School based on its previous year's test data. For those parents unable to attend this meeting, all information discussed at the meeting is available in print form.
Subsequent meetings are held during the year at which time, parents have opportunities to learn more about our programs and participate in activities that encourage parental involvement outside the regular school day. Numerous, regular communications are sent to keep parents informed of activities to improve student learning.
Through Title I funding, Southwood Elementary is able to offer materials and training to help parents work with their children. Through conferences, newsletters, telephone messaging and meetings, our staff are able to demonstrate to parents the value and advantages of the parents and staff being equal partners in the educational process.
All school information sent home for parents to read is translated into a language that is understandable as needed. Translators are used when needed to encourage full participation in all parental activities.
Southwood Elementary believes that the School-Parent Compact is an important part of the parent involvement policy. The school-parent compact outlines how parents, staff and students will share in the responsibility for improved student achievement. Parent-teacher conferences are required to explain the compact and relay the high achievement standards set for each individual student.
Parents are also encouraged to contact the school or county office with any questions that they may have. Additional phone numbers for other agencies are available upon request. We realize that the better we are able to communicate through out the year, the greater our successes will be.
