Health Care Policy

Good attendance is encouraged and anticipated, however, when students are too sick to do class work or have contagious systems they should stay at home. When a student is sick or develops a fever, parents are notified immediately. In case of slight injuries, first aid will be rendered and the parents will be notified.  LC emergency service (911) will be contacted for major injuries or illnesses.

Parents who have Scholastic Insurance are responsible for contacting the office for completing information needed for medical or insurance purposes. Homebound instruction is available for students whose illness requires a lengthy recovery. Contact the principal for information regarding the homebound program.

Medication is administered in accordance with NC GS115c-307, which specifies that parents are to make a request in writing for medicine to be administered by teachers. The request must include dosage, time to be taken, possible side affects, and a phone number where the parent can be reached immediately if necessary. A doctor or medical authority must prescribe the dosage. Medication must be sent to the office by the parent and must be in original containers. Our school nurse makes weekly visits and is available for counseling; in-service education, first aid, and other health care services. One designated individual will administer all prescription medication. Teachers will not be permitted to administer any medication except on special occasions like filed trips. All medication will be stored in a secure location. Parents may bring daily doses only of non-prescription drugs such as Tylenol and/or cough drops. These medications must be accompanied and give specific instructions for administering to their child in its original container(s).
