Northeast second graders learn the basics of gun safety

Second grader Tamia Hill-Bryant, 8, works on a connect-the-dots game within an informational workbook distributed to students at Northeast Elementary School in Kinston Monday during a gun safety presentation. The Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program will visit all second and third grade classrooms this spring in Lenoir County public schools.

Stop! Don't Touch! Leave the Area! Tell an Adult!” the school’s four second grade classes joined together in a chant that would be heard throughout the hallways of the Kinston school as many as four times in one hour Monday morning.
The response to the catchy educational slogan that since its inception in 1988 has reached more than 21 million children in all 50 states was “fantastic,” Northeast Elementary School Principal Kecia Dunn said Monday.

Students between the ages of 7 and 9 recited the phrase with ease after the hour-long seminar led by Jackie Leonard, community coordinator for the Kinston Department of Public Safety.

“The material is child-friendly and not only does it teach safety, but it reinforces what we’re teaching here in our curriculum,” Dunn said.
